The Play Perch, is a project for the students at the Jowonio Preschool; a recognized world leader in innovative education for students with special needs. It was a collaborative undertaking between local wood and metal shops, members of the Syracuse University School of Architecture, and off-campus local artisans, like John Coleman and myself. The process was largely a student-lead independent study. My team’s contribution was to custom fabricate some of the more intricate bespoke aspects of the space. Including the portholes fabricated from water-jet cut steel panels, a 5.5 foot copper-clad cantilevered window, a steel frame for the polycarbonate sheet inside the copper window, and the yellow arbor ring at the center of the structure.
